Community Etiquette

Hey everyone,

As I’ve mentioned over the course of the summer in a few threads, it’s no secret that the team currently is stretched across various projects and planning a few updates, which by default has led to a decrease in community-related content.

I am looking at options to bring back certain pieces of contests or community-led events, but I do feel the need to address some of the recent threads which have been catching my attention. I closed a thread last week, not due to censorship or not agreeing with opinions, but more so due to the personal attacks or veiled insults between members. Whilst members do not all have to agree or share the same opinions, I would like to see some more respect and fewer ‘clickbait’ comments or statements, aimed to draw a reaction from other members.

If you really have an issue or you feel something has caused you offense, please contact that member via PM and try to reach a middle ground and if that fails, please do contact me. It can be very easy to misconstrue a comment from an online community and a lot of issues can be dealt with directly, as opposed to creating individual topics which then cause a further issue.

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But remember to criticize ideas, not people . Please avoid:

  • Name-calling
  • Ad hominem attacks
  • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content
  • Knee-jerk contradiction

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

I hope that we can start moving forward in a more constructive way. I appreciate every member that makes up the soundcore community and I look forward to the next stages.

What weekly community content would you like to see come back first? Or does anybody have any fresh ideas they would love to see us try?

Starting Giveaways would be nice.
Some may need those points for coupons, others do not.

Sometimes members are using expressions a non natural English speaker will not understand at all.
And often its impossible even to find these in a dictionary.
This happened in the past and led to hazzles, I have heard.

So please my friends try to write your comments in English which could be understood by
those whose mother tongue is not English
Thank you.

This i know is very true, even from American English to English English. Many sayings said in the USA are not understood in England and vise versa. When I lived in Weymouth I had a wonderful couple nextdoor who were originally from the Czech republic, every evening we would spend hours where I taught them English. I picked up on a few slang sayings. For instance in America we use the term goosebumps to describe when the hair on your arms stand up straight when you get a chill from fright or other severe emotions. And in Czech republic the term loosely translates to ants crawling.

In German it’s “Gänsehaut” Gans = goose in Portuguese Its “Pele de Galinha” (galinha is chicken)

Another thing is, if some specialists are using technical abbreviations just to show they are specialists.
I could use those as well, but I try to avoid.
Not all here are those “experts”
As a teacher you learn very quick not to overstrain students.

Because the second half came out funny i am putting it here.

Now as for contests or features, I would like to see photos or music and giveaways. But with music we need to keep the results hidden until the end so that who voted on what and who is in the lead is kept hidden so no last minute vote changes . (I have seen that the transparency of votes has led to changes in who wins.) Either that or perhaps you, as in Sean, choose the winner it is done with photos. I would also suggest that points from these items do not reflect on the leaderboard. Perhaps a small item such as a cable or notes or even a mini speaker as a token win. Personally I would love to see weekly updates . And if the leaderboard ever comes back for prizes it should be for participating in the community such as posts, thread of the week, member of the week, perhaps even helpful member of the week. And perhaps new categories such as I introduce yourself where new members, and old members can tell the group about themselves and get connected. And maybe a everything else one where members can talk about day to day life events such as family vacations, new babies, home renovations etc. We really are a family here even with differences of opinion on subjects and do on occasion need to vent them. But what we need more than anything is brand participation and neutral moderation.

If I use abbreviations like mbps its so I can type less, not because I’m showing off. Lazy, maybe, showing off, no way.

mbps are clear.
Of course I am not talking about those

It appears the second half of my post did not come out . So I will have to write it out again. As for what I would like to see come back is giveaways, photos, and music. As well as weekly updates from the brand. With a few suggestions, photos and music should not reflect on the leaderboard but perhaps a small token prize, be it a cable, mini speaker, or even notes in the same as giveaways. And with the music it should be chosen by the admin or the votes should be kept hidden so no last minute changes.

I have a suggestion:
Since we don’t have giveaways anymore, it would be nice if those of us with Giveaway Tickets could convert them into Notes.

I too enjoyed the photo contests and giveaways. I do not have any “new” ideas at the moment, but will definitely be thinking about them.

May be it could be done.
But creating giveaways its cheaper for the company.
Many points wasted, only one participants wins.

This way I lost a lot! .
But its fun!

I used lots of Giveaway Tickets (well over 100) and never won a single Giveaway (bad luck in things like that).

The thing is without Giveaways, Giveaway Tickets are useless.

i am not good with what I call tech talk, so when advice uses tech talk all i hear or see ( when written ) is blah blah blah ( american term for not just noise with out real meaning ) which then causes me to turn off to the advice and not want to try . This is not just with electronic tech but just about all tech talk. If it is a subject i am an expert in yes i am aware of the tech talk but when training or explaining to others i first use the tech talk then break it down to basic terms those i am speaking with can understand . Sometimes it is not so easy and a pause is needed to think in simpler terms but I always felt it is better to have those i am training to truly understand what I am saying then know the tech speak . By using the tech talk first then basic knowledge talk a few times people usually get what the tech speak means some grasp right away while others need time ,

Accidents happen, words taken as not intended, and English misinterpretation can be a factor. As Sean writes, those can be easily settled via PM as if accidental then can be easily quickly addressed by edit / delete / apology as appropriate.

However there has been deliberately chosen, unambiguous personal targeting which should not be repeated. I could see them clearly so pointed to the very same text as Sean above.

There also has been been threads created deliberately to cause a “flame”. I am not clear if those who did that know they had crossed a line, but you’d expect those who decided to antagonise knew they were? I’ll leave the admin to direct PMs to those so they know unambiguously.

As for suggestions what to do:

  • competitions do cause new members, fun, so those should occur to help keep community alive.
  • I suggest they are based on talent. So quality not quantity.
  • examples are to guess who will win a future music competition and those who guess best win something. I’d obviously lose that I don’t follow music but it’s a Soundcore-related talent. I am ok with photo competitions although that does have an implicit bias unfairness as those who have more Soundcore products can submit more / better. There has been a circular issue of those who won more free stuff then had more stuff to put in photos to then win more again. So I’d prefer if not involving that, or someone who wins is not allowed to win for some period so it’s not the same few people.
  • more product engagement, so “ask the engineer” type events where we can influence products, or at least better understand decisions. A prize to the best idea?
  • no prizes based on new threads as that just invites spam threads of negative value, also not random selection as duplicate accounts is invited, nor on likes or votes as that similarly invites duplicate accounts to vote.

If all these are done then new members have the exact same chance of winning as existing members and cannot be played. I don’t direct criticism of players (individuals), but of structures which invite such as if one person didn’t play an obvious game then someone else would so if done based on talent then it makes everyone equal chance bar how much effort they put in here.

do you know the first time this was said to me i didnt understand, hell maybe for a year anytime i heard mbps or kbps i just ignored what was said it became noise to me. i had to spend a sleepless night after crying and fighting with someone who was going on and on tech speak who could not understand i truly did not understand what they were saying . I felt they were treating me like an idiot , yet if i mentioned SS5 operation or DPS or FSM system they would not understand so i would break it down never use the term unless I am speaking with someone who I know for sure knows it.

Some great suggestions here everyone, thanks for all the suggestions!

I’ll start looking into some content ideas and where possible start bringing them back :+1:

We have made a lot of suggestions in the past, but these were not realized.
As the members promised “to do better” , we hope the admins will do as well.

just out of curiosity what do you consider spam threads of negative value ? for me personally i enjoy music threads, what is happening in the music scene, music trivia, life events etc to some this maybe spam but for me it is a reason to comeback to be a day to day user, it is what keeps my interest. if it solely became a tech talk forum where it is only about fixes and tech talk it would be boring in my opinion. I do a lot of Human resources and training and have studied turnover rates one of the biggest reasons people leave employment and groups is a lack of connection. To have areas in which new members and old can connect is important. Connections can be similar interests , hobbies, work/group related ( such as the love of soundcore) family lifestyle anything really. When I see a thread that is purely tech talk to me its spam where as you may find it interesting and fantastic . So remember to other members using the term spam ( which can be taken negatively ) when discussing what they enjoy is insulting. and against the ToS .
I know i personally won several photos and i own a total of 4 products and at the time of photos only 3 . And I only ever took photos with products I personally own. I have access to many others from friends and family members but have only ever used my own. I have also lost many photo contests to others but seeing as the admins choose the picture and it does not get a prize so I do not see the circular pattern you describe.
I think an ask the engineer category or event sounds great as I know some on here enjoy that sort of thing.
and remember talent like beauty is in the eye of the beholder what you feel is fantastic other may not same as music, photos, art . I do understand the same applies to me which is why I say let the admins choose that is the fairest in my opinion

I have taken a break from work to read a few things.

@sean.L may remember this as well as others on the community that have seen this way back when and for the newer folks that have not been around as long as others have.

Off topics was removed after the first year as there was more spam of topics and spam of gallery pic (no longer around). On core update 52, Hannah provided a guideline of that post must be related to audio or music. This of course would include Soundcore related threads.

So music threads, music trivia (which I have done in the past), as well as audio and soundcore is and has always been accepted on the site with reason. There may be a few exceptions depending on what the admin have posted in the past. There has been admin threads/giveaways on the Wakey and Powerconf and I have let those slide as they are also music and audio as well but are usually talked about on the other specific brands communities.

@sean.L has laid out a good format to try to resolve things.
